  • Microfilm can last 500 years when stored correctly.
  • Access to microfilm is not limited to operating systems or other electronic delivery systems.

Is your archived film vulnerable to Vinegar Syndrome?

Most microfilm created prior to 1980 has a backing made of acetate plastic. These acetate films are subject to a kind of degradation called “Vinegar Syndrome.” The older acetate films have no more than a 100-year life expectancy.

Because some of this film is now over 60 years old, we are beginning to see more and more vinegar syndrome degradation. Once the deterioration of the microfilm occurs it cannot be reversed. The blemishes result in the permanent obliteration of the affected images.

All master microfilm created today uses a polyester plastic backing. Under proper storage conditions, today’s film has a 500-year life expectancy. Lakeshore Document Services can duplicate your film and help you preserve irreplaceable archives.
